My Story

I specialize in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of complex cases, psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy of children, adolescents and adults, and psychopharmacology. I bring a wide breadth of knowledge, research and hands-on experience to my practice from 40+ years in the psychiatry field.

I currently hold the title of Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University and am a distinguished life fellow at the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I am also privileged to have been:

• Director of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University;

• Head of Psychiatry at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children, in Perth, Australia;

• Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine;

• Head of Psychiatry at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX.

I have a particular interest in the care of persons from other cultural traditions, an outgrowth of my many years of clinical and research involvement with refugees from Southeast Asia, and particularly Vietnam. Prior to entering medicine, I served as a Captain in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V.” It was that experience that sparked my interest in both medicine and cross-cultural psychiatry.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife, children, grandchildren, and our two bullmastiff pups. I love relaxing with a good book, particularly testing my 2nd language with German history and literature. I try to exercise daily on a rowing machine and treadmill located, as my wife puts it, in the man-cave.
